Identify the panel and existing finish

Record the metal type, panel profile, attachment, approximate age, existing coating or factory finish, prior repairs, and areas of replacement. Standing seam, corrugated, and exposed-fastener roofs move and drain differently, so the details cannot be treated as one generic surface.

Map rust, movement, and water entry

Inspect laps, seams, fasteners, closures, penetrations, curbs, gutters, end conditions, and repair patches. Mark loose or missing fasteners, open seams, failed sealant, unstable rust, damaged panels, and areas where water can enter beneath the roof.

Clean, stabilize, repair, and test

Preparation may include removing loose coating and corrosion, cleaning contamination, replacing fasteners, repairing seams, treating stable rust with the specified primer, allowing the roof to dry, and completing representative adhesion tests.

The required method depends on the roof and current written documents. Do not assume one cleaner, primer, or sealant works over every factory finish or previous repair.
