Confirm the membrane and its history
Verify that the roof is EPDM, then record approximate age, attachment, ballast or surfacing history, previous coatings, repairs, leak history, and visible manufacturer information. Different contaminants and prior treatments can affect cleaning and adhesion.
- Membrane type, age, and attachment
- Prior coatings, repairs, or surface treatments
- Known leaks and moisture events
- Roof area, details, and drainage layout
Inspect shrinkage, seams, and terminations
Aging EPDM can show movement at seams, flashings, penetrations, perimeters, and terminations. Walk the full roof and map open laps, stretched flashings, cuts, punctures, loose membrane, wet insulation, soft areas, contamination, and drainage problems.
A coating system should not hide saturated insulation, active structural problems, or membrane that cannot remain securely in service.
Use the approved preparation sequence
Clean the membrane with the required substrate-specific process, allow it to dry, complete repairs, and run adhesion tests in representative areas. The accepted rinse, primer, base, and reinforcement sequence must come from current technical documents and project review.
- Protect drains and adjacent surfaces during cleaning
- Repair seams and details before full-field coating
- Test representative aged, repaired, and previously treated areas
- Document preparation and adhesion results
Think of the system as a bonded assembly
A reinforced acrylic restoration combines the prepared EPDM, compatible preparation, base coat, polyester reinforcement, and reflective weathering surface. Each layer depends on the condition and installation of the layer below it.
Carry the EPDM selection into the roof guide, estimate the measured area, open the system documents, and send one roof brief for confirmation.
This article is general planning guidance, not a project specification. Final preparation, product selection, coverage rates, and warranty requirements must follow current Metacrylics technical documents and project-specific review.
