STEP 1: Preparation of Deck and Application of Clear Acrylic
Prime
New
Construction and Important Tips:
If the walking deck is new, then no primer is needed unless exposed
to severe weather or dirtied. When constructing the deck, use ACX
exterior plywood. It costs more, but is more durable: the thicker
the better. Do not allow any gaps in the plywood; butt up tight
all plywood sheets and don't forget to allow slope for drainage
of water.
Fasteners:
Be sure to use galvanized nails, if screws are used, bondo each
and sand smooth. Any imperfections or gaps should be filled with
Metacrylics Acrylic GEL to level seams and imperfections. Low or
ponding areas should be leveled with Metacrylics Feathering Compound.
Allow 24 hours or more cure time, if Dens Dek is used, use the largest
head nails/screws available.
Old
(Existing) Walking Decks: Clean the exterior surface by pressure
washing and/or using TSP (Tri-Sodium-Phosphate). Remove all oxidation,
grease, dirt, and any other foreign materials. Any imperfections
or gaps should be filled with Metacrylics Acrylic GEL to level seams
and imperfections. Low or ponding areas should be leveled with Metacrylics
Feathering Compound. Allow 24 hours or more cure time.
Stir
the Clear Acrylic Primer thoroughly before each application. Apply
Metacrylics Clear Acrylic Primer with an airless sprayer or 1/2"
medium nap roller cover @ 1/2 gallon/100 sq ft. (1 gallon/200 sq
ft.) Allow 1 to 4 hours drying time. *IMPORTANT: The Clear Primer
is always tacky, even when completely cured and dry.
After
priming, 3-Course any splits or blisters with Gel and Fabric. X-Cut
and dry out blisters. Fold flaps back, nail down or cut out surface
blister, and 3-Course according to STEP 3.
STEP 2: Application of Acrylic Base and Polyester Fabric
Pour a small amount of Base and spread it about 40" wide and 2" to 3" long. Apply the Base @ 3 gallons/100 sq ft. *IMPORTANT: Before beginning, you may want to fill a small spray bottle with water for wetting areas that dry too quickly to allow you more time to apply the Base and Fabric.
Embed the 40" fabric into the wet Base, removing any wrinkles by pulling on the Fabric. Avoid stretching the Fabric when possible and never tent the fabric (trapping nails, rocks, or debris underneath the fabric). The fabric should conform naturally to the deck surface when pressed with a soft bristled broom or roller; be sure that all overlapped 3" seams are tight. All 40" rolls have a red line to guide you.
Immediately apply a cover coat of Base @ 2 gallons/100 sq ft. over the Fabric. Again, press sidelaps down firmly with the roller or broom. Let dry 24 to 48 hours. If any Base is left over, continue applying additional coats until it is all applied. If the 5 gallons/100 sq ft. of Base is not all applied, Metacrylics will not issue the warranty. Allow 24 hours between coats.
*IMPORTANT: When dry, you'll notice an obvious seam where the Fabric is overlapped. This will be seen when the job is finished unless Metacrylics Acrylic Base or Color mixed with rubber granules or fine sand (30 mesh or finer) is feathered over the seam with a trowel or large putty knife. Metacrylics Gel can also be used, but shrinkage could require re-application of the Acrylic Gel.
STEP 3: 3-Course Deck Perimeter Metal Nosing, Wall, and Railing Posts
Use masking tape around posts, wall, and metal nosing. Peel off when dry. Using a brush or rubber glove, apply a smooth layer of Gel over the area to be reinforced. Overlap Base & Fabric at least 2" and 2" up the post or wall, also, 1/2" past the nails/screws on the nosing.
Immediately embed a layer of Fabric into the Gel. Press Fabric firmly into the Gel with a brush or rubber glove.
Immediately apply a thin smooth layer of Gel over the Fabric. Feather the wet Gel with a brush to blend unobtrusively into the surrounding surface. Allow 12 to 24 hours drying time.
STEP 4: Application of Acrylic Color Texture Non-Skid
Option 1: Texture Roller Application
* Apply 1st coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ 1 gallon/100 sq ft.
* Apply 2nd coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ 1 gallon/100 sq ft.
* Apply 3rd coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color texture @ 2 gallons/100 sq ft.
Split a 5 gallon pail of Acrylic Color by pouring half into another 5 gallon pail. Mix 2 quarts of rubber granules or 30 mesh sand and 2-1/2 gallons of Acrylic Color with a wooden paddle.
Apply the texture with the texture roller cover very slowly or you'll create small air bubbles during the application. Work the texture back and forth to create a uniform application. Re-mix the texture between applications. Allow 12 to 24 hours curing time between applications at 70o F or above, lower temperatures may require more curing time. Apply additional coats of texture as needed to cover imperfections or blemishes.
Option 2: Broadcast rubber/sand over Acrylic Color
* Apply 1st coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ 1 gallon/100 sq ft.
* Apply 2nd coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ 1 gallon/100 sq ft.
* Apply 3rd coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ 1 gallon/100 sq ft,. gently broadcasting rubber granules or 30 mesh clean washed silica sand onto the wet Acrylic Color.
4. Apply 4th coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @1 gallon/100 sq ft. after sweeping off all loose unadhered sand. Allow 12 to 24 hours curing time between applications at 70o F or above. Lower temperatures may require more time. Apply additional coats of sand and Acrylic Color as needed to cover imperfections or blemishes.
STEP 5: Application of Clear Acrylic Stone Coat
Apply Clear Acrylic Stone Coat (a hard, clear protective coating) @1/8 gallon per 100 sq ft. (1 gallon per 800 sq ft.). It's best to apply with an airless sprayer or applicator pad. Allow 2 hours drying time.
Important Application Information:
* DO NOT APPLY products if rain is imminent within 24 hours, or during fog or drizzle. Metacrylics products are water-based and could wash off if not fully cured.
* PROTECT materials from freezing and extreme heat. Do not apply when temperatures are below 40° F.
* The Acrylic White dries slowly when temperatures are below 55° F. Dark colors dry much faster. Areas shaded from sunlight dry very slowly. 72 hours or more may be required for proper curing.
* DO NOT THIN or add solvents.
* KEEP AWAY from children.
* CAUTION! Wet acrylic is extremely slippery when stepped on. Use a safety rope around you on sloped surfaces.
* ALWAYS STIR the Metacrylics Primer before any application. Do not stir the Gel. Usually, the Base and Acrylic Colors do not need to be stirred.
* Wash up completely with water, abrasive hand cleaner, or cold cream and a fibered wash cloth. Remove dried materials from hands and clothing as soon as possible.
