STEP 1: Preparation of Roof
If the roof is plywood, leave a 1/8" gap between sheets to allow for expansion. When applying directly to plywood, additional strength may be obtain by 3-Coursing the joints with 2" or 4" Fabric and Gel. Normally, Base flows into the joints during application, if this is not desirable, then tape the joints with duct tape.
Class A Fire Rating and 80 MPH Wind Uplift: To receive a Class "A" Fire Rating, install either 1/2" gypsum board or 1/4" Dens-Deck (manufactured by Georgia-Pacific) to the plywood. An 80 mph wind uplift rating is achieved by installing No. 12 self-tapping washer-head coated steel screws with a 3 - 5/16 inch-diameter plastic plate. Screw length should be 1" using 1/4" Dens-Deck and no insulation or 1-1/4" using 1/2" Gypsum and no insulation, if insulation is used, the width of the insulation must be added to the above screw lengths.
Fastener Density: Approximately 1 fastener for 2 sq. ft. Near roof corners, eaves, ridges, and perimeters, increase fastener density to 1 fastener per 1 sq. ft.
For installation over a dirty surface, thoroughly sweep clean, and apply Metacrylics Clear or Black Primer @ 1/3 gal./100 sq. ft. Allow 2 hours drying time. If the plywood is still dirty, then we recommend application of Acrylic Primer. Apply the Primer @ 1/3 gallon/100 sq. ft. Stir the Primer before application. Allow 1-4 hours drying time or dry enough to walk on.
STEP 2: Application of Acrylic Base and Polyester Fabric
Start at the furthest point from your ladder so you can get off the roof when finished. When first starting the job, pour a very small amount of Base out and spread it 40" wide and 2-3' long. Apply the Base @ 3 gallons/100 sq. ft.
Embed the 40" FABRIC into the fresh Base, removing any wrinkles by pulling on the Fabric. Avoid tenting (trapping nails or rocks underneath the Fabric). The Fabric should conform naturally to the roof surface. Press the polyester into the Base with the roller or broom. *IMPORTANT: Press all polyester seams down firmly; i.e., press sidelaps down firmly with the roller or broom.
Immediately apply a cover coat of BASE @ 2 gallons/ 100 sq. ft. over the Fabric. Overlap Fabric sidelaps and endlaps 3" (all 40" rolls have a red line to guide you). Press sidelaps down firmly with roller or broom. If any Base is left over, it is imperative to apply additional coats until all the Base has been applied. Allow 24-48 hours drying time.
*IMPORTANT: Start early, stop early! On warm days the Base dries fast, so don't apply too much before laying out the Fabric. Keep rollers and brooms in the shade, pail, or water when not in use. A light mist of water can be sprayed over the Base (with a spray bottle of water) to slow down the drying time.
STEP 3: Application of 3-Coursing
For use as reinforcement of parapet walls, A/C's, perimeter flashings, roof penetrations, skylights, vents, chimneys, solar collectors, blisters, & other repairs. Using a rubber glove, apply a smooth layer of Gel over the area to be reinforced or repaired. Be sure to overlap the field area of Base and Fabric at least 2" and at least 2" up the penetration, curb, or wall.
Immediately embed a layer of Fabric into the Gel. Press the Fabric firmly into the Gel with the glove.
Immediately apply a smooth layer of Gel over the Fabric. If desired, brush the wet Gel lightly with a paint brush. Allow 12-24 hours dry time. The Gel is available in White or Gray. The Gray Gel should be used in low temperature conditions, since it dries twice as fast as the White Gel.
STEP 4: Four Applications of Acrylic White (or Color)
Apply four applications of Acrylic White @ 1 gallon/100 sq. ft. each application (a total of 4 gallons/100 sq. ft.). Allow 12-24 hours drying time between each application or dry enough to walk on. *NOTE: Very smooth surfaces may require 5 or 6 applications or Acrylic White to install the total of 4 gallons/100 sq. ft.
Important Application Information:
* Do not apply products if rain is imminent within 24 hours, or during fog or drizzle. Metacrylics products are water-based and could wash off if not fully cured. Do not apply when temperatures are below 40° F.
* Protect materials from freezing and extreme heat. The Acrylic White dries slowly when temperatures are below 55° F. Dark colors dry much faster. Areas shaded from sunlight dry very slowly. 72 hours or more may be required for proper curing.
* Do not thin or add solvents.
* Keep away from children.
* Caution! Wet acrylic is extremely slippery when stepped on. Use a safety rope around you on sloped surfaces.
* Always stir the Metacrylics Primer before any application. Do not stir the Gel. Usually, the Base and Acrylic Colors do not need to be stirred.
* Wash up completely with water, abrasive hand cleaner, or cold cream and a fibered wash cloth. Remove dried materials from hands and clothing as soon as possible.
