EXTERIOR WALL SURFACES How to install a permanent waterproof Elastomeric Rubber-like Coating over stucco, wood siding, metal, or concrete.
Tools Needed:
Spray shield; Rubber gloves; Sharp scissors
Medium-soft bristled push broom to apply polyester fabric
Breathing respirator mask; Throat Seal Liquid
Barricades and Barrier tape
Visqueen and Masking tape
Container of water on roof for tools; Spray water bottle
Screwdriver and Crescent wrenches
.031, .035 and .061 Spray tips
STEP 1: Preparation of Exterior Walls and Application of Clear Primer
Start at the furthest point from your ladder so you can get off the roof when finished. Clean the exterior surface by thoroughly power washing. Remove all grease, dirt, and any other foreign materials. Stir the Clear Acrylic Primer thoroughly before each application.
Apply Metacrylics Clear Acrylic Primer with an airless sprayer or 1/2" medium nap roller cover @ 1/2 gallon/100 sq ft. (1 gallon/200 sq ft.) Allow 1 to 4 hours drying time.
STEP 2: 3-Course Exterior Cracks Larger Than 1/16" Wide
Using a rubber glove, apply a thin smooth layer of Gel over the area to be reinforced or repaired with a brush, trowel, or glove. Immediately embed a layer of 2" Fabric into the Gel. Press Fabric firmly into the Gel with a brush, trowel or glove.
Immediately apply a thin smooth layer of Gel over the Fabric. Feather the wet Gel with a paintbrush to blend unobtrusively into the surrounding surface. Allow 12 to 24 hours drying time.
STEP 3: Application of Elastomeric Acrylic and Color
Option 1: Paint Roller Application
* Apply Elastomeric Acrylic Base @ 1 gallon/100 sq. ft. (100 sq ft./gallon). Allow to dry.
* Apply 1st coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ .75 gallons/100 sq. ft. (133 sq ft./gallon) in exactly the opposite direction of the Acrylic Base application.
* Apply 2nd coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ .75 gallons/100 sq. ft. (133 sq ft./gallon) in exactly the opposite direction of the 1st coat of Acrylic Color application. Allow 8 hours curing time between applications at 70o F or above. Lower temperatures may require more curing time. Dried film thickness is 25 mils.
Option 2: Airless Spray Operation
Spray Equipment:
Metacrylics is a very heavy Elastomer weighing more than 12 lbs./gallon. When pumped from the ground to the roof, an airless pump rated at a minimum of 1.25 gpm (gallons/minute) is required.
We've chosen the Graco 1230, as it's proven to be simple and reliable. However, before you buy a pump, rent it first to be sure that it will meet your specific needs. The Graco 1230 has a 5 hp Honda engine, a 6" x 2" siphon hose that pumps from the barrel and sprays @ 3 gpm @ 1200 psi, and allows up to 300 ft. of hose. It also has an optional quick change accessory to pump from 5 gallon pails @ 3,000 psi, 1.25 gpm. When adding more hose, buy the next larger size diameter. Connect the new larger diameter hose directly to the pump.
Airless Spray Instructions:
*IMPORTANT: DON'T SPRAY on windy days! Use barricades around the job. Visqueen all skylights, etc., not to be coated. USE BREATHING MASKS when spraying and KEEP HANDS AWAY from tip!
* Apply Elastomeric Acrylic Base @ 1 Gallon/100 sq. ft. (100 sq ft./gallon). Recommended spray tip size is .035-.039. Apply in a cross-hatch pattern, vertically and horizontally.
* Apply 1st coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ .75 Gallons/100 sq. ft. (133 sq ft./gallon). Apply in exactly the opposite direction of the first application.
* Apply 2nd coat of Elastomeric Acrylic Color @ .75 gallons/100 sq. ft. (133 sq ft./gallon) in exactly the opposite direction of the Acrylic Base application. Allow 8 hours curing time between applications at 70o F or above. Lower temperatures may require more curing time. Dried film thickness is 25 mils.
Important Application Information:
* DO NOT APPLY products if rain is imminent within 24 hours, or during fog or drizzle. Metacrylics products are water-based and could wash off if not fully cured.
* PROTECT MATERIALS from freezing and extreme heat. DO NOT APPLY when temperatures are below 40° F.
* The Acrylic White dries slowly when temperatures are below 55° F. Dark colors dry much faster. Areas shaded from sunlight dry very slowly. 72 hours or more may be required for proper curing.
* DO NOT THIN or add solvents.
* KEEP AWAY from children.
* CAUTION! Wet acrylic is extremely slippery when stepped on. Use a safety rope around you on sloped surfaces.
* ALWAYS STIR the Metacrylics Primer before any application. Do not stir the Gel. Usually, the Base and Acrylic Colors do not need to be stirred.
* Wash up completely with water, abrasive hand cleaner, or cold cream and a fibered wash cloth. Remove dried materials from hands and clothing as soon as possible.
